Objects of desire – A Leica. Any Leica!

While I'm not overstruck by these rather overpiced (IMHO, of course!) offerings from Leica, they did remind me of how much I covet their "standard" offerings.

Of course, "standard" from Leica is not inexpensive, and with excellent and MUCH more affordable options available from the likes of Canon, Nikon, Sony Panasonic (Their Lumix range even boasts a Leica lens) why would you stump up all the extra moolah for a Leica?

Well, basically because it's Leica. In 1913, Leica virtually invented the 35mm camera as we know it today… and since then they have become synonymous with build quality and simplicity of design. Their digital offerings are still very traditional in design… why mess with a winning formula? They are after all design classics. If you want to buy me something for Christmas, and you're feeling generous, anything from their M range will do!

And the prices: A Leica M8 will set you back about £2,500. It's hard to compare anything to a Leica, but perhaps the innovative Panasonic Lumix G micro system ( http://bit.ly/ilVfz ) comes fairly close, and you can get a decent one, with a zoom lens, for about £600. It's got a Leica lens, and it'll take you some lovely pictures… but it's not a Leica.

Oh, and the brightly coloured examples at the top of the article? The Hermes M7 limited edition, you're looking at about eight and a half grand. Now that IS more money than sense.

Letter Playground

I thought (and still do think) that the Daily Drop Cap site I wrote about last week ( http://crocodilejock.posterous.com/daily-drop-cap-8 ), was a pretty neat site.

But "letterPLAYGROUND" from Illustrator/Hand Letterer Nate Williams may top it… you can even join in and submit your own designs.
Part inspirational resource, part game, it's completely irresistible!

Colourless Coke Can

From the "Nice idea, but it'll never run" department is this colourless Coke can by New York based Industrial/Product Designer Harc Lee.

Instead of the classic red & white Coke colour palette, a simple debossing effect conveys the brand… to "Help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in
its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of
energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved."
I'm not quite sure how you convey all the small print mandatories… and things like a barcode for instance, but it's a nice idea, nonetheless.
I'd love to see it run, maybe as a limited edition.

There's plenty more from Harc Lee on the behance network: http://www.behance.net/HarcLee

Why I HATE Derren Brown

He's simply far too talented for a single human being.
Did you know, for instance, the guy is an incredibly talented artist?

Bennett Robot Works

This isn't a particularly new site, but I love this stuff.

Great retro robots made from discarded electronic and mechanical equipment – If I had a few quid I'd love a collection of these!
They're not cheap, prices from $900 to $6,000 – but they are one off, originals. If that's a bit rich for your blood, there's a 24" X 36" poster available – but even that is $50!
