Objects of desire – A Leica. Any Leica!

While I'm not overstruck by these rather overpiced (IMHO, of course!) offerings from Leica, they did remind me of how much I covet their "standard" offerings.

Of course, "standard" from Leica is not inexpensive, and with excellent and MUCH more affordable options available from the likes of Canon, Nikon, Sony Panasonic (Their Lumix range even boasts a Leica lens) why would you stump up all the extra moolah for a Leica?

Well, basically because it's Leica. In 1913, Leica virtually invented the 35mm camera as we know it today… and since then they have become synonymous with build quality and simplicity of design. Their digital offerings are still very traditional in design… why mess with a winning formula? They are after all design classics. If you want to buy me something for Christmas, and you're feeling generous, anything from their M range will do!

And the prices: A Leica M8 will set you back about £2,500. It's hard to compare anything to a Leica, but perhaps the innovative Panasonic Lumix G micro system ( http://bit.ly/ilVfz ) comes fairly close, and you can get a decent one, with a zoom lens, for about £600. It's got a Leica lens, and it'll take you some lovely pictures… but it's not a Leica.

Oh, and the brightly coloured examples at the top of the article? The Hermes M7 limited edition, you're looking at about eight and a half grand. Now that IS more money than sense.
